Parker's - Mitsubishi Colt (04 on) review
Colt is the car that can turn around the way UK buyers see Mitsubishi. Currently the company is thought of as a maker of tough 4x4s, like the Shogun, and blisteringly quick, rally-bred saloons, like the Lancer Evo. Now Mitsubishi wants to show Brit buyers that it's not just a two-trick pony and it can produce some innovative mainstream models. The new Colt does just that - it's instantly recognisable, looks young and funky and has been developed alongside the Smart forfour, with which it shares engines and an awful lot of parts.

Press Release
Tokyo, May 11, 2005 - Mitsubishi Motors has chosen to center its development of next-generation electric vehicle technology on in-wheel motors and on lithium-ion batteries that the company has been working on for several years. Mitsubishi Motors has already started development and testing of the MIEV concept using a production compact vehicle, Colt, to serve as the rolling test bed. The Colt EV uses rear in-wheel motors powered by a lithium-ion battery system. The company is also currently developing a more powerful in-wheel motor for use in a 4WD test car. Rigorous proving ground tests are now being conducted on the Colt EV. The test car is scheduled to undergo a tuning program with independent control of drive torque and braking force for left and right wheels to improve dynamic performance. After receiving vehicle type certification, Colt EV will undergo verification testing on public roads.

MITSUBISHI doesn't flog dead horses. It resurrects Colts. Would you believe the first one dates back to 1964? There was another near the end of that decade, to deal with a little problem known as the Toyota Corolla. Then came the crisply styled Colt III from January 1981 until 1990. That one, manufactured in Adelaide from mid-1982, was charged with holding back the hot-selling original Laser. It did well for its parent too. Now, today's fourth Colt incarnation, taking over the tired but true Mirage, has to help resuscitate Mitsubishi, as well as challenge every baby from the Hyundai Getz to the VW Polo.

Mitsubishi COLT, AUSTRALIA - MotorSM
Colt is powered by a new generation engine that achieves a balance between performance, fuel economy and cleanliness. Integrated electronic management of Mitsubishi's own MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve lift and timing Electronic Control) engine and the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) powertrain is just one of the cutting-edge technologies Colt employs.

Telegraph Motoring Threes are a crowd
It's no secret that Mitsubishi has been going through a few rocky years, worldwide. The recovery plan goes like this. Since parting company with DaimlerChrysler, the Mitsubishi family of companies is now the major shareholder in its own car division, and has invested massively in it. Even though the dealers have been more accustomed of late to selling bigger vehicles costing more than -L-30,000, the five-door Colt launched last year hit its sales targets. Again, Mitsubishi bosses stress that the Colt is a "retail car", not a numbers chaser.

Mitsubishi Colt XLS NRMA car review - Motoring - MyNRMA
As the popular Mirage disappears from Mitsubishis local line-up, the Colt nameplate returns, ready to battle it out in the premium small car sector. Its stylish mono-box design, (more compact people mover than hatchback), features a panoramic front screen and upright abbreviated tail. An excellent dash layout puts everything at your fingertips. Simple rotary switches in the centre look after airconditioning and ventilation. The generic Mitsubishi radio is within easy reach - just as well since there are no switches on the small leather rimmed wheel. Although not crash tested under the local ANCAP scheme, the Colt scored four out of five stars in the similar Euro-NCAP program. Standard equipment includes; dual front airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and brake assist. Side and curtain airbags are available as an option.
