There's good news afoot, though, for the oil-burner lobby. The Grandis struck gold for Mitsubishi when it first went on sale a year ago, and something like 700 models shot out of the showrooms within the first few months.

Mitsubishi say it isn't a direct replacement for the Spacewagon, and in that respect there's now a gap in its MPV range, because the Grandis is right up there with the more expensive end of the large people-carrier band, while the Spacestar is a little less than the mid-range norms. The droop-snoot front almost looks as if it will touch the ground, but in fact there's ample clearance. And an extra bit of sculpting over the rear passenger area has a stretching effect on the overall look. Something that is accentuated by the fact that the Grandis has an overall lower roofline than most large MPVs.
Road Tests: Mitsubishi Grandis DI-D Road Test
The rearmost seats, dubbed Hide and Seat by Mitsubishi are full of tricks. You can flip them up out of a well that then leaves space for luggage, Honda Shuttle style. But they can also be folded to provide a pair of spectator seats under the hatchback for British sporting events when it rains. No backbreaking job, either.

It's big, its clever and does plenty of things that an ordinary estate car could only dream of. But does that mean you'll want one? John Simister found Mitsubishi's Grandis spacious, comfortable, quiet and powerful. As for the middle row, split conventionally into a double and a single seat, it can slide, tip and fold forward in typical MPV fashion. Folded out of the way, with the rear seats hiding, the Grandis becomes a flat-floored van. The sound system is simple and fills the Grandis with good sounds, and the three-dial instrument cluster is quite fun with its blue lighting that activates itself in three stages upon start-up: outer rims, needles and finally the rest of the dials. Its intensity automatically adjusts with varying ambient light levels, too.

Lets try to get a handle on the Grandis dimensions. At 4755mm long, its a good 10cm longer than a Ford Galaxy. Its also a good deal narrower, its wasp-waisted 1795mm width making it less broad in the beam than a Ford Fiesta. Thats about 14cm lower than a Toyota Previa. If headroom in your garage is an issue but you need seven seats, the Grandis is an interesting option. Its not the only option, however, as Hondas even more compact and low-slung Stream also seats seven and offers sparkling driving characteristics. Move up to the Equippe and for -L-21,599 theres stability and traction control, a dual sunroof, cruise control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear shifter plus a CD autochanger. Tack on leather seats and you have the Grandis Elegance, priced from -L-23,099 for the manual car. The Warrior gives you a DVD entertainment system, 18" alloy wheels and some exterior styling features in addition. The Grandis was never really at the races until the DI-D diesel engine came along. All but those suffering from a morbid fear of the black-handled pump gave the petrol a miss in favour of a rival manufacturers oil-burner.

THE Grandis seven-seater is the first all-new vehicle to reach Australia with Mitsubishi's bold new exterior design and stands as a vast improvement over the Nimbus and Starwagon it replaces. It is far from being a revelation in the often-overlooked people-mover class, however, Grandis does have significant mechanical and packaging improvements over the faithful Nimbus (the issues with Starwagon are better left unsaid) and most importantly it brings a new level of safety equipment to the class.
