The first Evos are underrated compared to the newer models, but the III can beat the heavier Evo IV and can compete with the latest models. The old III is a cracking car. Proton uses the bodyshells of the first Evos for their Wiras (formerly Personas) now, which are aimed at mostly sensible people who are unlikely to know that their car uses the same bodyshell as a swift Evo.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution V part 2
After running alongside the WRC cars for almost a year and allowing Tommi Maekinen to be the World Rally Champion, the Lancer Evolution IV was replaced by the Evolution V at the beginning of 1998. By then it was difficult to differentiate the Lancer Evo V from a WRC car. It had the same width as WRC cars had and some of the modifications applied to the Evo IV, in order to produce the evo V, clearly put the evo V in the WRC class. The Lancer Evo V was still a GroupA class car though which means that at least 2500 Evo V had to be produced in order to comply with the FIA rules. This was very good news for rally car amateurs since it meant they could, theoretically, buy a Lancer Evo V.

As a road car the Evo IV is awesome value for money. Featuring all the improvements over the previous versions in a better looking package it stands head and shoulders above the preceding Evos. The car is available in the GSR road trim version and the RS version, which is stripped of all the niceities of the GSR for those that want to turn their car into a rally car. The Evo IV road car has handling to spare thanks to it's Active Yaw Control and four wheel drive grip. The car remains flat through sweeping and twisty corners with the trick differentials taking care of maximising the available grip. The ABS system works well with the large brakes to reign in the Evo. To maximise the ability of the Evo a well setup alignment will work wonders and that means you'll have to go to a professional and not your local free coffee and a biscuit tyre dealer. Having a professional install a new set of dampers and springs, replace the bushes and then check the geometry will completely transform the handling from great to awe inspiring. Adding a set of larger alloy wheels with sticky rubber at the same time will also help.

In 1997, the WRC created a new class, "World Rally Car", and while these cars still had to abide by Group A standards, they did not have to meet homologation rules. Mitsubishi completely redesigned the Evo IV with this in mind and introduced the Evo V in January of 1998.
