The new 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GTS convertible comes from a car line-up that has proved something of a survivor over the years. The Eclipse debuted ten years ago as one of three flavors - essentially the same car was also available under the Plymouth and Eagle brand names. While the other cars have gone away, the Eclipse has continued to evolve. It was restyled in 1997, the same year a convertible Spyder version was introduced.

"The Eclipse Spyder is offered in three trim levels: GS, GT and GTS. Standard equipment on the base GS includes a power-operated convertible top, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, adjustable lumbar support, a 210-watt Infinity stereo with a CD player, auto-off headlights, a rear spoiler, cruise control, keyless entry, an anti-theft system and power windows, mirrors and door locks. Next up is the GT, which adds a V6 engine, 17-inch wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, ground effects, a chrome exhaust tip and foglights. In addition to more power, the top dog GTS also packs leather seating surfaces, a power driver seat, an in-dash CD changer, ABS and side airbags. Leather upholstery is optional on the GS and GT.

The $28,297 as-tested Eclipse Spyder GT gets its performance credentials from past success and present-day goods. The first two generations of Eclipses were known for their prowess and peaky turbocharged power. Of course, a topless frolic sounds great to most twentysomething guys, especially if it involves babes from the late lamented Baywatch. And like those enhanced women, the Eclipse Spyder offers a little jiggle. Structurally it's in good stead; on highway slogs and back-road kinks, it doesn't betray the lack of a roof very much. In terms of exterior styling, the Eclipse Spyder makes for an interesting comparison to the much more expensive Audi TT roadster. The latter's a museum piece, all Deco lines and machined metal surfaces, and not precisely the blast to drive that its lines imply.

Mitsubishi is also using Americas biggest auto show to launch the long-awaited replacement to the Eclipse Spyder. Its well overdue, considering the third-gen Eclipse Spyder is still available, looking rather dated and old next to the newer, flashier Eclipse coupe.

"The Eclipse Spyder and the breakthrough Concept-CT continue the excitement of the brand and demonstrate new design directions and potential future technologies," said MMNA President and CEO Rich Gilligan.

The Eclipse Spyder returns with only minor changes for 2002. Two models are again available, GS and GT. The GS is equipped with a 147-hp four-cylinder engine, while the GT receives a 200-hp V-6. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on both models, while a four-speed electronically controlled automatic is available at extra cost. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows and locks, and a single CD stereo.
