Entry-level '280' models come first, with power up to 281 bhp from the current 260 bhp starting point, and all standard Evos will receive revisions to their suspension, all-wheel drive system, traction control and electronic control systems to give a lower centre of gravity and ever-sharper handling, as experienced in the Evo VIII MR 360. There is also talk of an aluminium bonnet to reduce front-end weight.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife is notorious for its bumpy and undulating surfaces, twisting corners and changes in surface friction. It was there that engineers discovered one potential area of improvement for the Lancer Evolution. "Better driving quality" became an engineering mantra. The Nurburgring test results brought home the need to deliver every bit of power to the road surface through all four tires; it also showed the need for accurate feedback that gives the driver the highest level of control over where those tires are placed. As result of such testing, in 2005, Mitsubishi introduced the next level in handling performance: the Lancer Evolution MR.

This newest Evo was track-tested at the Nurburgring, so the car feels most at home when it's either going really fast, driving through some "twisties", or while driving through the "twisties" really fast. At slower speeds, the Evo has a rough ride, and it will most definitely piss off your girlfriend or make her sick. But who cares about her?

After running alongside the WRC cars for almost a year and allowing Tommi Maekinen to be the World Rally Champion, the Lancer Evolution IV was replaced by the Evolution V at the beginning of 1998. By then it was difficult to differentiate the Lancer Evo V from a WRC car. It had the same width as WRC cars had and some of the modifications applied to the Evo IV, in order to produce the evo V, clearly put the evo V in the WRC class. The Lancer Evo V was still a GroupA class car though which means that at least 2500 Evo V had to be produced in order to comply with the FIA rules. This was very good news for rally car amateurs since it meant they could, theoretically, buy a Lancer Evo V.

But what really sets the Evo IX apart is the way it goes around corners. In tight bends, where the old car would understeer and spin its power away, the front end of the new Evo grips so much earlier and it can even be provoked into power oversteer if you're aggressive enough and ballsy enough with the throttle and steering. You'll have to fight some pretty intense torque steer to make it happen but once you get used to unwinding the steering lock yourself you can perform all kinds of crowd-pleasing slides in roundabouts and tight radius corners. The trick diffs are noticeable at higher speeds, too, allowing you to pitch the car more sideways than before and hold it there for as long as your skill and available tarmac allows.
