Mitsubishi-Motors/Evolution
For almost a decade the magnificent Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution has been carving a reputation as the supercar slayer. It has, quite literally, set the pace in four-wheel transport, for when it comes to blitzing the distance from point A to point B nothing, but nothing else comes close.

The Evolution Challenge will continue to follow its successful format, by appearing on all seven rounds of the National Gravel Rally Championship, with the addition of one visit to the British Rally Championship, the Jim Clark Memorial Rally.
Inside Line: First Drive: 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX ...
Located a half hour southeast of Nagoya, the massive facility is where every Mitsubishi Evolution since the 1993 Evo II has been developed, where five generations of Lancer sedans have become seven of the world's all-time greatest street cars. The Evo was already the greatest performance-car buy on the market, with starting prices of $28,504 for the RS, $31,274 for the straight VIII and $35,274 for the MR. The revised 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX is better and should cost just $500 more across the board.

The Evolution X will boast Super All Wheel Control, the next step forward in Mitsubishi's all-wheel-drive layout. S-AWC integrates with the existing 4wd three-differential and Super Active Yaw Control layout found on the Evo IX, adding active brake control, active steering control and roll-control suspension into the equation. The comprehensive dynamic-control system processes thousands of inputs to offer the best possible characteristics in the pursuit of high performance. Similarly, Mitsubishi grew tired of hearing criticism of the Lancer's lackluster and cheap-looking interior, and intends to impress in this department. The idea is to keep the cabin design clean and uncluttered in order to make it easier to concentrate on driving. An advanced multimedia system, centered on a dash-mounted pop-out high-resolution LCD screen, will offer real-time readings from various engine sensors and up-to-date operating status of the S-AWC. The body will also serve as the basis for Ralliart's next-generation World Rally Championship contender. After some rather unsuccessful few years in WRC, Mitsubishi will try to climb back on top of the series, of late dominated by French contenders Citroen and Peugeot.
2005 Mitsubishi Evolution MR - The Car Connection
Driving the Evolution on the track is immensely enjoyable because it's so docile and predictable. Despite all the power, keeping the right amount of it dialed up at any given moment is the most challenging part, but once you adapt to that the Evo will make you look good out there, even if you haven't had any formal training. Although the all-wheel-drive system will put up with most sorts of idiotic driving, the powertrain demands finesse and attention. Stability is pretty amazing when you nail the brakes, too. A new 'Sports' anti-lock system is standard on Evolution and MR models. The system uses steering wheel, lateral acceleration, and vehicle speed sensors to individually brake each of the four wheels with the optimal force. Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, as offered on many other models, helps supplement the system by balancing the braking force from front to back depending on overall brake force and vehicle load.

Evolution variants are available. Prices start with a base, five-passenger Lancer going for less than $14,000, but stepping up to the level of the test Evolution MR means paying $34,199 plus $595 for delivery. Adding a spiffy dress-up package pushed the tester's price to $35,594. There are, needless to say, quite a few family-oriented, sporty and utilitarian vehicles out there at that price. The MR comes with red-on-black instrumentation that looks nice, but can be difficult to read at night. Little else about the interior layout and trim is objectionable, assuming you keep in mind it started life as an econocar. Once up to MR status, though, the Lancer Evolution MR becomes much more than an econobox.

Mitsubishi America wants to sell 6500 of them in the first year after launch, which happens to be early 2003. Sorry, no specific dates... Yet. While no launch date has been officially announced by Mitsubishi in Australia, word is that a late 2003 shipping date is on the cards. How much?
