New Rocket/Car Review: 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR
You say that modern cars are boring? You think they are antiseptically-sterile and have no character? Well, yes, some are that way. Actually, many are that way. But not all - try a quick jaunt in the latest iteration of Mitsubishi's legendary Lancer Evolution series of rally cars for the street, the MR. The driver's office is set up perfectly for the task at hand, and the front Recaros provide excellent comfort and lateral support. Part of the MR's weight reduction plan involved reduced soundproofing, but that's a plus for a car like this as the various mechanical sounds of the engine and drivetrain give it character. There is, however, also more road and wind noise - but the Lancer Evolution MR is not a car for the superslab, or any long, straight road with speed limits. Those are merely transportation stages. The Evo MR is meant for the sort of twisting, challenging roads that are used for special stages in WRC events. Freeways? Only if you must. Backroads?

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI
The Lancer Evolution VI was announced in late 1998 and went in production by early 1999. Mitsubishi apparently insisted on producing GroupA spec cars for the greatest satisfaction of its buyer base. At least 2500 Evolution VIs had to be produced to get the FIA homologation and most mainly sold in Japan. Unfortunately this new version is the last of its breed. Mitsubishi officially announced on September the 21st 2000 that starting from 2001 they will only produce WRC class cars for competition purposes. This statement means that no more street legal versions will be available to potential buyers since they are no longer required for homologation. The Lancer Evolution VI is the most accomplished road going version of any homologation special car ever produced. Its technical specs are extremely impressive as are its road holding abilities and handling. Mitsubishi had more than a chance of winning a new World title. A proof of this statement was brought by the Evolution VI winning its first ever official rally entry, the 1999 Monte Carlo rally. Although the Lancer Evolution VI is but a small step away from its predecessor, technically speaking, the fact it won in the first two events it took part in (Monte Carlo and the Rally of Sweden 1999) did more than imply that the quality of its engineering and accomplishment had matured.

Under the magnesium valve covers, hollow camshafts save rotational weight, and less inertia means that engine RPMs build faster and acceleration times go down. New MIVEC variable valve timing helps the engine breathe better at high revs.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife is notorious for its bumpy and undulating surfaces, twisting corners and changes in surface friction. It was there that engineers discovered one potential area of improvement for the Lancer Evolution. "Better driving quality" became an engineering mantra. The Nurburgring test results brought home the need to deliver every bit of power to the road surface through all four tires; it also showed the need for accurate feedback that gives the driver the highest level of control over where those tires are placed. As result of such testing, in 2005, Mitsubishi introduced the next level in handling performance: the Lancer Evolution MR. The Lancer Evolution MR strikes the delicate balance between grace and power. Building on the Lancer Evolution's rally-proven reputation, the MR pushes the performance envelope even further with improvements to the crucial elements that make driving a true pleasure. For 2006, engine output was increased, but more power was not the top priority. While a six-speed transmission is exclusive to the MR to make the power more accessible, the IX and RS models also receive a revised closer ratio 5-speed gearbox that helps keep the engine in the "sweet spot" of the power band. The All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system in the Lancer Evolution IX relies on an Active Center Differential (ACD) and front limited-slip differential (LSD), which - combined with Sports antilock brakes (Sports ABS) - creates a more natural, better-mannered driving feel.
