Mitsubishi entered the midsize sport-utility market during the 1997 model year, adding the new Montero Sport as a smaller-size companion to the long-lived regular Montero. When Mitsubishi introduced the Montero in the mid-1980s it was a small, relatively inexpensive 2-door vehicle that was sold as a more refined alternative to a Jeep. Over the years the Montero, as have most sport utilities, grew larger and much more expensive. With the new Montero Sport, Mitsubishi bucks that trend by bringing back a smaller, more affordable vehicle competing in the higher-volume compact sport-utility vehicle segment occupied by Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Blazer and others. While it has the same wheelbase as its larger sibling, the Montero Sport is not as tall and not as bulky.
