When Mitsubishi introduced the Montero in the mid-1980s, it was a small, relatively inexpensive 2-door vehicle that was sold as a more refined alternative to a Jeep. Over the years the Montero, as have most sport utilities, grew larger and much more expensive. The Montero Sport arrived in the lineup in calendar 1997 as a slightly smaller, more affordable vehicle to compete with other mainstream compact sport utilities such as Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Blazer and others. While the Montero Sport has the same wheelbase as its larger Montero sibling, the Sport is not as tall or wide.
