MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT LS 4WD (1997)
The Montero has evolved in a very upscale direction over the years, leaving a large void in Mitsubishi's lineup - the entry-level and mid-priced sport-utility niches. The Montero Sport was developed to fill that void, and features the same rugged body-on-frame construction and long wheelbase as its big brother. The Montero Sport is designed to compete against all of the popular small and mid-sized SUVs, so a comprehensive range of models is available. The entry-level SUV buyer is the target for the 4-cylinder, manual transmission, 2-wheel drive Montero Sport ES. The heart of the Montero Sport lineup is the mid-level LS. APPEARANCE: Except for the Mitsubishi triple-diamond logo in the center of the grille and "Montero Sport" badges on the flanks and tail, the Montero Sport has no styling cues in common with the big Montero. It's considerably lower and shorter. It's not exactly small, but is an easy size to deal with in crowded parking lots or tight trails. A contemporary two-box "4WD station wagon" in design, the Sport LS is well-proportioned and stylish enough for the country club.
2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport - The Car Connection
While neither engine makes the Montero Sport a rocket, both provide adequate power. Their only drawback is that they seem to lack low-end torque, an important feature considering the 4,000-pound heft of the truck they are supposed to propel.
1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a slightly smaller, sportier sport-utility than the big Montero. It combines the toughness of its big brother with good looks, while not skimping on luxury features or necessary ruggedness. The so-called compact sport-utility market is a crowded field. Mitsubishi's five-passenger Montero Sport competes directly with the Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner, Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport. Domestic contenders in this group include Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy and Oldsmobile Bravada. All Montero Sport models except the leather-draped Limited have good-looking cloth seats. They are well-padded and comfortable, and the range of adjustment for the front seats is sufficient to give most people plenty of legroom without cramping the folks in the back seats. Lots of luggage can be brought along; even with a full load of passengers on board more than 43 cubic feet of load space is available.
