The Shogun used to be the king of the 4x4 market - then it was heavily re-vamped and lost the good looks that made it such a winner. This is a big off-roader that is extremely good away from the tarmac. Unfortunately, high prices mean you would be foolish to crash down a mountainside in one of these.

Mitsubishi SHOGUN RANGE Review – Yahoo Cars UK
Alongside Citroen, they foresaw that an adjustment had to come in UK car pricing and got their retaliation in first, netting many satisfied buyers and catching most of the opposition on the hop. Knocking a few hundred pounds off the list price may gain a few customers in the short term, but its hardly a tactic likely to endear customers looking for something new in this most image conscious of sectors. Therefore, the latest Shogun debuts Mitsubishis Active Stability and Traction Control (MASTC) across all models in the range. The Shogun has a tough task on its hands. Buyers are abandoning the market for real 4x4s and defecting in droves to more car-based tackle such as the Lexus RX300, the Volvo XC90 and the BMW X5. A change of model emphasis was required - which is just what weve been treated to in the latest version. Part of Mitsubishis success can be attributed to the way they divided the 4x4 market up into small, medium and large sectors. No manufacturer can now hope to satisfy the budget-conscious, the family buyer and the luxury-led executive in one model range as this car did when it was originally introduced in first generation guise. These days, three very different approaches are required, hence Mitsubishi's provision of three very different 4x4 Shogun line-ups.

Telegraph Motoring Brute force and common sense
Just a few months ago, Mitsubishi insisted tough off-road vehicles had to be built on a separate ladder chassis. That was at the launch of the company's new small off-roader, the Pinin, which instead of a separate ladder chassis, had a stressed steel shell just like a modern passenger car's. So the new Shogun uses a steel monocoque with extra strengthening in the floor and a claimed 300 per cent greater torsional rigidity. Doing away with the separate chassis means the engine and transmission can be mounted lower down which lowers the centre of gravity, improves handling and reduces weight, which means greater performance and economy. And if you do venture off-road, there is more clearance underneath. The new Shogun comes with three or five doors and each is slightly longer and wider, but with a lower roofline than on the previous models. To go with the new-found roadburning aspiration, there is rack and pinion steering and a new fully independent multi-link rear suspension with coil springs in place of the previous big beam axle.

On the outside, the car is a single colour, forsaking the oft-seen two-tone style, and giving a rather distinguished air to this big, big motor. Don't get the wrong idea, though - plush fittings are fine - but the Shogun is still the real deal as far as 4x4s go. You can put it in the same company as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol... This heritage gives Mitsubishi's big fella a certain street cred (although it should be field cred) and it's nice to know that, if needed, the Shogun can strut its stuff where some 4x4s might fear to tread. The driving experience is one that takes a little getting used to. High, wide and handsome the Shogun may be, but stepping up from a family hatchback requires a slightly different mindset - especially when reversing.
